On 20th March 2023, following the advice and direction of Azimio Party leader, the country went on a nationwide protest against the cost of living and harsh economic times. The protests in Kisumu county led to the death of a Maseno University student following the use of live bullets by the police to disperse the crowds. William Manyange was pronounced dead moments later after being rushed to the hospital for his bullet wound on the neck. The police involved are claiming that they were overwhelmed and that the protesters were destroying property. They further claimed that they ran out of tear gas which led to the use of live bullets.
This occurrence has led to questions on the legality of public order management of the Kenyan police. Was the use of force necessary? And if so, was the amount of force used warranted? The right to protest continues to be infringed in Kenya.
