Protesters stormed the streets of Siaya town to join in the national Saba Saba protests that took place on 7th July 2023. The protests were for the high cost of living experienced across the country and the recently passed Finance Act 2023.

Most businesses remained closed during the protests due to the previous violence encounters with the police during protests. As predicted, the police dispersed the crowds by lobbing teargas to the crowds. Some protesters were arrested including a Standard Group journalist named Isaiah Gwengi. He was allegedly assaulted by the police and his working equipment confiscated. The police continued beating  him even upon showing his credentials as a journalist. He was released hours later. The Bondo Sub-county commissioner, Ibrahim Kosi later stated that the arrest was a case of mistaken identity.
