On 7th July 1990, a movement was born. Kenyans, in their defiance, took to the streets to march against one-party dictatorship that had plagued Kenya since independence in 1963. This movement led to Section 2A of the then Constitution being repealed and a new multi-party democracy was born in Kenya. 39 people lost their lives, 69 seriously injured and 5000 arbitrarily arrested.
The Saba Saba movement has always been a blueprint for Kenyan protests. Today, 7th July 2023, 33 years later, Kenyans march for their lives. This time, we march against the high cost of living, the lack of implementation of Article 43 of the current Constitution, the over-taxation of Kenyan citizens and the violation of several human rights.
Civic Freedoms Forums joins Kenyans in marching for our lives. May we march peacefully. May we not be arbitrarily arrested. May justice be our shield and defender.
