On 3rd May 2023, four police men who were convicted of the murder of a British National named Alexander Monson. The police officers were convicted by the Mombasa High Court in 2021.
Mr. Alexander Monson was arrested for allegedly smoking bhang at Diani beach resort in May 2012. The accused police officer initially stated that the deceased died of drug overdose but upon an inquest conducted in 2018, it was established that the cause of death was injury to the head. The police officers were sentenced to jail terms between nine to fifteen years.
The police officers, however, appealed and were released after serving just eighteen months. This has been considered as step back in the justice system. Rogue police officers are seemingly getting lighter sentences for extra-judicial killings.
