On Wednesday, the high court in Nairobi ordered all police officers to wear visible nametags and uniforms when interacting with protestors. Judge Bahati Mwamuye issued the ruling in response to a lawsuit filed by Florence Wairimu on July 31st.
The judge mandated that the National Police Service ensure compliance with paragraph 10 of the Sixth Schedule of the National Police Service Act, requiring all uniformed officers or those acting on their behalf to display a nametag or identifiable service number clearly visible on their uniforms during any interactions with individuals assembling, demonstrating, picketing or petitioning.
Additionally plain cloth officers are prohibited from wearing balaclavas or otherwise concealing their identities, and the dentification or markings of any vehicle used during protests.
