On 29th of April 2023, police dispersed a protest by throwing tear gas at parents who were protesting the reopening of the school. The institution was recently closed due to severe food poisoning that caused 256 students to be hospitalised and the death of 3 students and a teacher.

The parents were protesting the reopening of the school before the destruction of the contaminated food stuff. The Regional Commissioner threatened that the school would be reopened whether or not the parents brought their children back to school.

The police throwing tear gas at the crowds led to commotion on the Kakamega-Kisumu highway hence causing traffic and disrupting day to day activities along the highway.
