On 12th July 2023, Kenyans took to the streets to join the nation-wide protests to protest against the high costs of living experienced across the country.

Protesters were caught in a violent confrontation with the police who lobbed teargas canisters to disperse the crowds. The police also used live bullets to disperse the crowds thereby killing two protesters in the process. Brian Muendo, an 18 year old man was one of the victims of the police. He was shot dead while walking down the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway just close to his home. The governor of Makueni county expressed his concern over the deaths and called upon the Independent Police Oversight Authority to conduct a thorough investigation and bring to book the involved police officers.

In Wote, protesters and police were entangled in a violent confrontation that involved the police throwing tear gas while rogue youth, posing as protesters, threw stones at the police.
