Police arrested a group of peaceful protesters outside the Parliament building on 21st of February 2023. The youth-led group was protesting the current high cost of living in the country. Citizens are currently experiencing high taxation and very high cost of living for the common “Mwananchi”.
The protesters attempted to access the Parliament building in order to have audience with the National Assembly Speaker, Moses Wetangula to air their grievances on the skyrocketing cost of living in the country. The protesters also demanded the passing of legislation to combat the high food prices so as to cushion Kenyans from the high cost of living.
The demonstration was forcibly dispersed when police threw teargas to the crowds and arrested the protesters. The protesters were arraigned in court and released on a cash bail of KES.10,000 each. Kenyans continue to experience violations of their freedom of assembly among other rights.
