In yet another incident of police brutality in the enforcement of a COVID-19-related curfew, on 19th August 2021, residents of Kayole in Nairobi protested the death of John Kiiru who was allegedly beaten to death by police officers for violating the COVID-19 curfew. Kiiru’s body was found on the street the next morning, sparking demonstrations. Protestors barricaded roads and lit bonfires while police officers responded by firing teargas to disperse the protesters.
