On 7th July 2023, protests took place all over the country. The date was reminiscent of the protests that took place on 7th July 1990 that resulted to the repeal of Section 2A of the then constitution which provided for Kenya as one-party state. The Saba Saba protests led to Kenya being a multi-party democracy.
The recent national protests were for the high cost living experienced by citizens in the country and the over-taxation that will be brought about by the recently passed Finance Act.
In Kisumu, protesters gathered in the CBD, carrying placards that aired their grievances while others blocked the road. A supermarket was looted by rogue youth posing as protesters. Several protesters were injured by the police who threw teargas to the protesters while using excessive force in an attempt to disperse the crowds.
The anti-riot police used live bullets which resulted in the death of two protesters in Nyawita and Kondele. Their bodies stayed on the streets up until 6PM. Several other protesters were injured by gunshots.
