Members of the Turkana County Assembly passed a motion to ensure accountability by NGOs. The motion was tabled by the majority leader Stephen Edukon. The motion seeks to sieve out “briefcase” organisations that fleece out donors and do not implement any changes in the community. The majority leader stated that there are over 30 NGOs in Turkana and most of these organisations have activities and operations that are unknown to the National and County Government. He further stated that the said organisations do not employ locals.

The motion proposes a  County consortium of NGOs that will investigate each organisation and their due respect of the law. This will be a way of sieving out briefcase organisations and crowding of NGOs in some towns. The MCAs further agreed the the consortium will frequently meet to apportion responsibilities and ensure a mandatory quarterly report is submitted to the Assembly.

The proposed consortium will ensure that locals are employed in these organisations and the job vacancies be advertised. This will ensure that locals benefit from these organisations.
